STEP is a unique solution for students on the fast track from school to higher education.
What is STEP International?
STEP International allows students to start one of the selected Diploma programs at the Southbank Institute of Technology while enrolled in Years 11 and 12 at a Queensland Government school. When they finish Year 12, STEP International students may complete the remaining units of their Diploma without further applications. STEP International students have a guaranteed place in the Diploma and upon successful completion they can progress to university. Once again the student will have a confirmed entry to their identified university program and credit for what they have studied in their Diploma
How Does STEP International work?
STEP International students study their STEP Diploma units on campus at Southbank Institute for one day each week. They will study alongside Southbank Institute of Technology's full-time and part-time students who are studying towards the same Diploma. During the other four days of the week, STEP International students will attend their Queensland Government school and study for their Queensland Certificate of Education.
What are the benefits of STEP International?
Confirmed Entry to Southbank Institute of Technology
Upon satisfactory completion of Year 12 and their STEP courses, STEP International students are offered a confirmed entry first to Southbank Institute of Technology and, after completion of their Diploma, then into University. This means that when a student enrols in the STEP International program they know they have a guaranteed place at Southbank Institute and University and don't need to apply to study at either Institution.
Reduced fees/timeframes
By studying as a STEP International student at Southbank Institute while in years 11 and 12 at a Queensland Government school, students will take six months of full-time study off the Diploma duration when they transition to full-time tertiary study to complete their Diploma. On graduating from Southbank Institute students have the opportunity to receive six months to 1.5 years of credit towards their university degree which means they may be able to go straight into the second year of their chosen Bachelor degree!
Pathways to University
All of the Diplomas offered to STEP International students have pathway options to University. Southbank Institute partners with a number of major Queensland universities to provide students with a quality highly focussed learning experience which means they graduate with a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge.
Accruing points towards the Queensland Certificate of Education
STEP International forms part of a student's high school curriculum. This means that STEP International students are achieving points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education. STEP International students accumulate one point towards their Queensland Certificate of Education for every Diploma unit they complete, up to a maximum of 8 points.
A place to stay
STEP International students have access to accommodation options depending on the stage of their studies and age. Students can select homestay facilities or purpose built student accommodation right next door to the Southbank Institute campus. More information can be found at www.southbank.edu.au/urbanest.
